Introduction to Niv Louie

Niv Louie is a piece of software that allows anyone with the skillset to build a spreadsheet, to create access to any Unicode symbol with speech and braille.

The access through speech comes with the use of NVDA, which is open-source screen reader software, easily downloadable from the internet, free of charge.

The access through braille comes from within Niv Louie itself, because Niv Louie utilizes the spreadsheet built by the user to create braille documents.

The access through braille also comes through Lib Louis, which is also open-sourced software utilized by nearly every software providing access to information through braille.

What does Niv Louie Do?

  1. When Niv Louie is running, the user has the ability to create a new project from the dashboard.
  2. After choosing to create a new project, Niv Louie allows a user to upload a spreadsheet which contains several pieces of information. The information stored in the spreadsheet is:
    1. 1. The Unicode character.
    2. 2. The name of the character.
    3. 3. The Unicode of the character (this is usually a sequence of numbers and letters).
    4. 4. The optcode or Type of character (for Lib Louis).
    5. 5.The Unicode braille symbol or symbols that are being assigned to the Unicode character.
  3. Once the project is made, the spreadsheet is saved into Niv Louie, and the project can be used to do several major things:
    1. 1. Create braille documents.
    2. 2. Create Add-on for NVDA.
    3. 3. Create braille table for Lib Louis.
    4. 4. Create YAML (also known as test documents) which are required to publish a braille table for Lib Louis.
